What it means to be a CASA volunteer
When a child is removed from their home for their own safety, it is a chaotic and confusing time in their life. Between new environments, lawyers, Child Protective Service agents, judges, the child needs one constant face, a confidante, when they feel like they have no control. This volunteer is called a Court Appointed Special Advocate®, or CASA.
- CASA volunteers are community members working collaboratively to support children and families involved in the foster care system.
- CASA volunteers work for the health and well- being of the community.
- CASA volunteers are well trained, appointed by the judge, and supervised by professionals.
Big Country CASA endeavors to provide valuable volunteer advocacy for every child within the Taylor County child welfare system. CASA volunteers provide information through court reports and testimony and make recommendations in the child’s best interest to the court. CASA volunteers are a consistent presence in a child’s life while working collaboratively with others involved in the case. Advocates ensure appropriate physical, mental health, and educational assessments are completed and that the child’s needs are understood by everyone involved in the case. This allows our volunteers to bring a unique perspective to the court case, advocate for the best interest of a child, and make informed recommendations for the child’s physical and emotional wellbeing to the judge.
