CASA Cafe – Anger Management in Crisis

Anger Management in Times of Crisis: Assisting Victims of Crime during High Emotions by Elizabeth Powell, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, through Palm House in Abilene and a Violence Against Women Act grant.

The goal of this training is to help first responders recognize and understand the underlying emotions behind anger in victims of crime, then help them recognize various anger styles so they can help calm the victim of crime enough to communicate in a more helpful way. We will also discuss unhelpful thinking that the first responders may encounter and help them develop coping strategies to introduce to crime victims that can be implemented in the moment. These strategies will aid the first responders in creating a calmer exchange with the victim so information can be better exchanged, and victims can avoid feeling negatively impacted by those responding to the crisis. We will end this program with self-care strategies that will help the first responder relax and let go of their stress at the end of their shift.
